Artificial Insemination (AI)

Artificial insemination (AI) is a precise and efficient breeding method, maximising success through careful timing.

At our state-of-the-art breeding facility, we offer AI services using fresh, chilled, or frozen semen.

AI Procedure

  • Initial Examination: Upon arrival, your mare undergoes a breeding soundness evaluation, including assessments of the vulva, cervix, uterus, and ovaries. Any issues, such as poor vulval conformation or uterine infections, will be addressed with a tailored treatment plan.

  • Ongoing Monitoring: Once cleared, we regularly scan your mare’s reproductive tract to determine the optimal time for insemination.

Semen Handling

  • Chilled Semen: Ordered before ovulation, aiming for insemination approximately 12 hours prior to ovulation.

  • Frozen Semen: Stored securely in liquid nitrogen tanks and available for use at the optimal time. We recommend its arrival before the mare enters oestrus.

  • Fresh Semen: Collected on-site and used for insemination 6-12 hours prior to ovulation.

Post-Breeding Care

After insemination, we provide post-breeding scans and treatments, like oxytocin administration or uterine lavage, to support conception. Mares can remain with us until their 14-day pregnancy scan or return home 2-3 days after insemination.

Pregnancy Confirmation

At 14 days post-insemination, we conduct a pregnancy scan. If twins are detected, we perform a sac ablation to ensure a viable pregnancy.

Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer is an advanced reproductive option that allows high-performance mares to continue their competition schedules or aids mares with difficulty carrying to term.

How It Works

  • Synchronisation: The donor mare’s ovulation is synchronised with a recipient mare, ensuring precise timing for embryo transfer.

  • Embryo Retrieval: Seven to eight days post-ovulation, the embryo is flushed from the donor mare and transferred into the recipient mare.

Why Choose Embryo Transfer?

  • Performance Mares: Enables breeding without interrupting competition schedules.

  • Reproductive Challenges: Ideal for mares unable to carry a pregnancy to term.

  • Multiple Foals: Allows for more than one foal per mare per year.
